I don't know who writes up these articles but it sure would be nice if they got the facts straight. Yes, IH put a whole lot of money into those final drive update packages. I personally updated ten of them my self. I don't recall a one of them that had a failed or badly worn part and some had run well over two years by the time all were done.
It was bull gears, bull pinions with bearings and housings, differential with bearings in original package. Nothing was done in the transmission. Many other improvements were done after that first program but they were on a fix as fail if in warranty and special prices for bearing packages if customer wanted to update to latest and greatest.
A lot of dealers had company personnel or hired extras to do the upgrade but I did all at our dealership.
