O K lots of good guess below but let me try to explain what is going on. Yes it could be the seat switch but most of the times not. Your L 40 series uses a fuel control solenoid that has THREE wires one ground, one we call the pull in circuit , power goes to the pull in coil only when you have the key in the CRANK position then when you drop back to run another coil called the HOLD in coil is energized . The pull circuit uses a remote relay but the run circuit is powered from the key switch. Your hold in coil may be bad, most times that is the situation. However if the tractor has sat and the battery is weak or you have a weak ground the hold in coil can drop out. I can tell you haw to test the fuel solenoid but easy way is remove the two allen screws and see if it is holding in.
