Maple syrup season is late winter/early spring when the trees start to wake up from winter. Trees need days above freezing and nights below freezing to get good yields. By the time buds appear they stop producing or isn't good syrup. Later season syrup tends to be darker and stronger tasting which I personally like. Its hard to say what the house brand was without looking at the label. There are definitions of what maple syrup is as far as dilutions, grade, etc. Many times house brands are cheaper because they negotiate a better price but they may also add something to help the price. It should say on the label. When buying pure maple syrup smaller containers always cost more per unit of weight than larger containers. Around here a full gallon goes for around $45 which would be around $100 buying the little containers. I don't know how the season went this year - probably depends on the region.
