My first tedder was a four-basket German made unit (they made for Deere at some point, as well). You could shift the main gearbox slow for standing windrow up, fast for spreading the crop out, and the whole main beam would angle to move windrows over about four feet. I have never seen another with the gearbox. Parts were made from unobtainium and it had been well-used before I owned it.
I replaced it with a two basket Kuhn, and miss the four baskets. I will be upgrading to four soon.
I went through the same scenario with my Dad, not with hay, but running the manure spreader and turning off the beaters without stopping the apron chain feeder. He plugged three loads so bad I had to hand-unload them.
I had to send him home that afternoon, and I was not happy. But I'm glad he showed me his condition- I was aware how far he had slipped and we took measures to compensate. He didn't hurt himself or anyone else as he declined, something we are very fortunate to say.
He was gone in 90 days, the damn cancer got him, but not until he had wrung every last minute of work out of his body that he could give me. God, I miss him.
