For some homes, the sump pump is the last barrier for you to prevent hundreds or thousands of dollars damage to your home & contents? I would want a pump that I know will work and has a good reputation. Cheap wouldn't be on my mind. If your home is at risk of flooding, a secondary system should be high on your list.

If you have a secondary system, you should incorporate some form of alert that it is running, and for you to check out the primary pump & get it repaired soon.

A good secondary pump is one that runs off of city water, if you have access to it. Yes, cost more to run, but it'll be there to keep your house dry, even during a power failure.

A friend bought a battery back up system for his sump. It was much smaller than his primary. A few years ago, during a storm, he lost power. The insufficient pump couldn't keep up, and his basement still flooded.

My son's first house had a sump pump. It ran nearly all the time. We replaced it one day, gearing up for a race track speed change out, but to our suprise, the water level climbed 6" higher, then didn't climb any higher in his sump. He was trying to pump the local water table down. Raised the pump, and it hardly ever ran again.

As others have mentioned, is the topography of your yard causing part of your problem? Has something in the neighborhood changed, funneling more water towards your house? I hope your house wasn't built under water in the first place. My brother's house, for years, was always damp in one corner, even with a sump pump. We looked around outside. His landscaping caused surface water to run towards the house. On top of that, the down spout for the majority of the front of his house simply dumped on the ground at the corner of the house, with no place to go other than down. A 10' piece of PVC pipe burried to lower ground dried up his basement for good.

Best of luck....

Today's Featured Article - Oliver 550 Clutch Overhaul Tips - by Greg Sheppard. I got my 1964 Oliver Model 550 (serial 141-139-519) second-hand and used it for several years before the clutch began to slip. After taking up the pedal linkage several times I saw it was going to take more than that. The engine had been leaking oil at the rear seal and I suspected ... [Read Article]
