Pinion depth and ring gear backlash determine the contact patch of the two gears. The contact patch is checked after final assembly. The pinion is first to be installed for reassembly. The pinion depth can be measured from the split line of the carrier side bearings by placing a straight edge on the split line across the width of the housing above the pinion gear.If the depth of the old gear is measured at say at 4 3/4", (or 4.7345" depending on ruler or dial indicator), installing the new pinion with the larger pinion bearing pressed on, then the shims from the old set up and the new bearing cup in place the pinion depth can be measured and adjusted without pressing the large bearing off. The shims are placed under the bearing cup in the housing for pinion depth, note the illustration above. Duplicating the original measurement is no guarantee of perfect contact but only a starting point. The preload for the pinion bearings is adjusted by the shims under the bearing cup of the smaller of the two pinion bearings. When the pinion nut is torqued the shims replace the crush sleeve to limit preload. Preload here keeps the contact patch consistent, the pinion cant move back and forth when changing from forward and reverse, a few thousandths slop is not good for the gears, and too much preload will hurt the bearings. The preload is measured in inch pounds of force to turn the pinion without the carrier installed. You dont have to have a dial indicator or inch pound torque wrench to put the deal together so it will last under load, but you have to feel and see the important nuance details.

The loads on that teramite gear set are extreme with a heavy load in the bucket and making tight maneuvers around the shop.

Today's Featured Article - The Engine Rebuild Kit - by Curtis Von Fange. I always liked engine rebuild kits. They have all the replacement parts for overhauling an engine without going to the store to get gaskets, special measuring tools, or miscellaneous parts. They come neatly packaged, clean and tidy. But it's important not to let that packaging lull you into a false sense of security. The appearance of matching sleeves, pistons, rings, and bearings can cause frustration and agony if not properly measured and installed in a workshop environment. Following c ... [Read Article]
