I haven't lived there for many, many years, but I grew up in Northeastern Ohio. We had a bunch of muck farms in the area, but only in a narrow band that wound its way down through the area. The muck farms provided lots of jobs for the young men, planting lettuce, asparagus, cabbages, and other vegetables. Then we got to harvest the produce as it became mature.
All around the muck farms were traditional dairy farms, but the muck farms were an important part of the local agriculture.
