When you say you want to "enlarge" the photos, for what purpose? To print or just display on your screen? For a printed image, you need the maximum image resolution, so you need to be careful how you resize the image. Note that the file may have become compressed when he sent it, so check the file size. An uncompressed phone image will be well over one megabyte. If it's less than a megabyte it probably got compressed, so you'll want him to resend the image uncompressed. Images sent as email attachments are rarely if ever compressed, but images sent as text messages are usually compressed. Also, images shared on social media sites like Facebook are generally compressed.
Now if you just want an image on your computer screen, you don't need to worry about compression because video screens (unlike printers) don't have enough resolution to be affected by compression.
