I have fixed many of them. Not something I do unless I cannot find a replacement (aftermarket or original). The wire gets worn, rubbed through and finally breaks in the originals. You just buy a roll of the correct type resistor wire and rewind it. The wire is cheap but it takes patience. For example, I just rewound the gas tank sending unit for a 1969 Toyota truck. I needed 22 feet of 33 gauge Nichrome wire that is 13.2 ohms per foot and .0071" diameter. A 100 foot roll of the special resistor wire cost me $9.
When fixing a sender, you unwind the wire and measure what the total length was. Then find out what the max resistance was supposed to be and order new wire to match.
