On the opposite side of the shaft from the push-button there should be a c-clip (sometimes it looks more like an H) that holds the spring. Maybe the clip got lost and perhaps the spring is awol as well. With the clip off and the spring out of the way tap that end opposite the push-button with the right-sized punch and see what happens.
