I hope you didn't in any way stretch that square section seal ring, if you did you will NEVER get it pushed into the groove and be leak free.
30 years ago my very pretty 30 year old female Boss walked into my office playing with a sealing ring for a water filter exactly like your seal ring. I'll tell you a secret, the oil filter seal rings in my Super H is about 25 years old, and 15 years old in the M. Dad and I never changed them, and I only changed them them so I know how old they really are.
