A lot of misinformation about 1 wire alternators on the internet like you just stated someone else will quote it as Gospel.I've mostly found the root of the 1 wire misinformation is from sellers of complicated wiring systems and parts.On several diesel tractors I have the only electrical system required is a wire from the alternator to the hot side of the battery and then a hot wire to the starter button and a wire back to the starter solenoid.no switch required,have run a David brown 780 like that for years,charges fine,doesn't run the battery down when sitting etc etc etc.If needed any electrical system like lights,preheater etc an be added by adding a fused line.I like to use the plug in fuses in each line to make trouble shooting very simple.
