It was marketing in terms of considering the D series the offspring of the WD and WD45 which were commercial successes for AC. Lots of those two models sold around NY new back in the day and put AC dealers firmly on the map here. If I had two guess the only tractors that out did the WD and WD45 around here would have been the Farmall H and M, JD A and B, and Ford N series. I know that there are several WD or WD45 tractors within 15 minutes of me. Probably not that many JD's and maybe only as many Farmalls. It would be interesting to take a ride to places where I went as a college student for ag field trips to see how many around especially in the Southern Tier. Last I knew a fair number had blades or loaders put on them for snow duty once they retired from regular farm work.
