In all the years I have raised cattle I always sell the ones I�m not keeping when I wean them. Not a bunch - 100 a year or so. This fall I decided not to sell the spring calves and just background them until spring prices go up. I�ve got the extra hay this year so why not.
I have a neighbor who does a small scale feed out - 20 or so a year. He hauls them to Nebraska right to the packer and get his cash once they are graded. I�ve never feed them out other than to butcher. From far Northeast Kansas is the best route Nebraska? I have no idea how one goes about selling direct. Anyone out there do it? I kind of feel dumb after 40 years of cattle not knowing how they get to finish.
