Grandpa was a carpenter. His brother as well. Grandpa built many barns and houses. The horse shoe rafter was laid out with 1x boards end to end and a string used to mark the arch. The arch was cut with hand saw and later circular saw. The top slivers were stitched under the square butts of the joints and the joint were half lapped per layer. The barren at the farm was alternated with 3 layer and 5 layer rafters on 16” centers. I’ve also seen quansets with laminated hoops where the 1x4’s are bents to a jig and laminated to form the rafter.
Grandpa’s brother Tony carried on the tradition of round barns. There are many ways to frame these structures as well. The pics are in a recent Dairy Star periodical and reference a new book on Minnesota round barns. Uncle Tony built the Albany barn.
