In 1988 shortly after my father passed my mother wanted an CD/Cassette/Radio. She ask if I could find her one. I went to the PX at Ft Knox and found one I thought would be good for her. Then I decided to wait. Later that day I was in a box store in Radcliff KY and the same unit was cheaper than the PX and that was with adding in sales tax. The PX has not been price competitive in years. By the time I retired in 96 about the only things you could really save money in the commissary was tobacco products and coffee.
Back in the late 60's/early 70's congress forced changes in how the PX and commissary priced things here in at US bases to "make it fairer to off post civilian businesses". Because of those changes pricing in the PX and commissary rose accordingly. Overseas you can still save a substantial amount of money but not if stationed in the US.
