I also have a IH 966, great tractors for many jobs. First thing that come to my mind, for your story is. You said it ran fine at first, then acted funny. After you added more fuel it ran normal, not right away, but after a bit. So my thinking is that too me it sounds like something is in the fuel tank, and could be blocking the flow of fuel once the fuel level in tank gets low. Not a huge job to empty the fuel tank on a 966 and clean it out by flushing fresh fuel through it. I have had this kind of problem on other Diesel tractors in the past, not my 966, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen to it too.
