No. The truth is that Gen McAuliffe never used profanity. The worst word he ever used when things wern't going well or he was mad, or both, was: "NUTS". Gen McAuliffe was taking a combat nap when he was awakened by his operations officer (Div G3) Lt Col Harry W.O. Kinnard with the news that German officers were there demanding their surrender. He yelled out "NUTS". Then he assembled a few members of the division staff to try to get the story straight and figure out how to word a reply. Col Kinnard said: "I think the first word out of your mouth was pretty damned eloquent". McAuliffe said; "What was that?" When Kinnard told him he paused and then decided that would do just fine. True story.
