My father was drafted late in life, was an Army cook at the battle of the bulge and was awarded a bronze star for pulling the wounded out of a building that was targeted by the Nazi air force. Of course, as a kid, I asked him if he ever shot anyone but his answer was very vague. I understood that the question was not welcome so never really pursued further information. Later, when my mother was downsizing, she gave me some letters from the front which were very interesting. He and the other infantry guys also said of Patton....His guts and their blood. There was no love lost there.
