Mom's cousin was married to one of the 8 guys that were in on the 1st wave of Marines on Iwo Jima who walked off the island. He was one of 2 guys from SD that were on the mountain when the memorial's picture was snapped. He & the other South Dakota guy are in other pictures taken at the same time. After the movie about Iwo Jima came out, I asked him at a family reunion if anyone from the movie had contacted him about his experiences there. He said "ya, but I told them to go to h#!!, as I had already been there and didn't need to go baack". jal-SD
