orientating your drive line and engine along the same axis eliminates the need for beveled gearing to turn the output of the engine 90o and that causes less parasitic loss of available torque. The same thing with positioning the radiator along the same plane, you dont need to twist your fan belt like a corvair! As a bonus, you can see better whats ahead of you. John Deere positioned their twin cylinders this way for 50+ years
