When I built my wood splitter I put the filter in the suction line to protect the pump as I had welded up the tank. Steel was not that clean. It works just fine but when it is cold it is slow until the oil warms up. But it has been used for over 40 years too. I have had to reseal the cylinders twice in all those years. Still the same pump.
