My $.02, The two heaters I found effective are: The canister type, where a hose comes out of the block into the heater and then goes back into the block, on these you have to make sure that the cold inlet is below the hot outlet, they work by convection (at least I think that is the term). and The freeze plug type, where you remove a freeze plug and install the heater, on these you have to get the correct size for your particular freeze plug. One thing I do on both, as soon as I buy them, I remove the cover and make the electrical cord as short as possible. I always use an extension cord anyway and I don't need all that cord hanging there to get caught on something, especially when I use my tractor in the woods. I had a John Deere 3010 Diesel once that didn't have a cord on its heater at all, there was a cap that you removed to expose a male plug. I thought it was a good system.
