I've heard of this problem a lot and know some folks who have had tranny problems. I know the trannys can be a problem. However, I've never had problems with these trannys and I'm on my fourth Chrysler minivan (knock on wood!) My current one, a 97 Voyager just turned 105,000 but I had the complete tranny service performed at 80,000 miles. Also, our driving usually never included short trips; most were at least 20 miles one way and since we live in the country, very little of it was stop and go town driving. However, having said that, 70,000 miles is way too soon for a tranny to go. I've been very happy with my vans; my first one, an 87 Voyager went 240,000 miles (engine rebuild at 165,000) and it was still running when I sold it last summer. What have it learned from all of this? Find an honest, competent and reliable independent shop and stay with them. Avoid the Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth like the plague except for dire necessity or emergency. My $.02.
