I lived in Alaska 25 years and i saw many kinds of block heaters ect.. tried. The best working cold start system i saw were freeze plug heaters. They use 1/2 the electricity of the heater hose heaters, because they are in the block, so they can be much smaller (usually 750 watt). It is true that they may need to be plugged in longer than a larger heater hose unit (usually 2 hours). The oil dipstick/pan heaters do burn the oil, and heating the oil does thin the oil for faster cranking, but it doesn't heat the upper part of the block where combustion takes place. Heating the combustion area is what you are after! As for fuel additives: I once had an injection pump fail. I took it to a pump shop where i knew the owner. A few days later he called me and asked, "you been useing Power Service in your fuel???" I had to admit i had, and his answer to that was not to use it peroid!!! AND that if i did use it after he rebuilt my pump, there would be NO warr.. I never used it again!! My pump rebuilder only recomended Standyne fuel additives, and he sold them for his cost to encourage customers to use that brand. Robert
