You're probably right, I've never done that with an old truck but I've seen cars and trucks that have kicked the 12V down for those circuits. I guess a lot of that old 6V stuff was built so "heavy" that they'd operate OK on 12V unless they were really buing overused or pushed to their limits. You've obviously had personal experience with it so it's likely going to work OK.
