Even if an engine will start at freezing temps or colder without a block heater, it's better to use one. The few cents of electricity used pays back in reduced fuel used to warm up or operating while at reduced efficiency(cold). I watch my neighbours idle for 20 minutes wasting fuel while we just start, scape the windshield & drive off with the defroster already giving full heat. Less engine wear & electrical system stre$$ as well. A battery heater is just as important as a block heater. At 0F a battery has 40% of it's 70F power. A quality synthetic oil such as Mobile 1 or Amsoil will make cranking weasier & obtain oil pressure much sooner. A magnetic heater is good for oil pans & garden tractor engines but 200W is very small/slow.
