That's a crock . If the basement was done correctly then one should not have to worry about it . BUT on oold houses with cut sand stone foundation or one that was not done correctly then ya may have a water problem , if you set low or built on a wet weather spring , hill side you may have a wet basement . proper drainage is the key and having the floor slope to a common drain is a good idea . Sump pumps are only good when they can keep up with the incoming water and you have POWER to keep them running . I deal with a WET basement all the time as i have everything going against me , living on a hill , cut sand stone foundation , wet weather springs , run off that can get so bad that at times there is 8-10 inches of water running down the drive next to the house , now as long as the floor drain that is a little over 120 years old is open we get a little water on the floor . BUT let that drain get plugged with tree roots then it can get deep like waist deep as it has three times now in the thirty years we have been here . If i was twenty years younger and the OLD guys were still alive i would fix this problem with a new foundation and way better drainage. The ones that would come in and jack a home up are all dead and gone and nobody around here does that stuff anymore . There equipment and iron all went to scrap . But as for me i will keep a basement under a house . Makes fixen a leaking water pipe or sewer way easer then busten up concrete makes it a lot easer thawing a frozen pipe and stepping on a good old fashioned wood floor a lot warmer in the winter then a cold slab of concrete.
