The key to alfalfa production in the east and mid south is pH. Soil test and apply lime and fertilizer before planting. Any of the new varieties do a pretty good job. If spring seeding look for high to very high resistence to aphanomycies. Fall seedings tend to be susceptable to scleratina (in this area). I persoanlly seed Amerigraze 401Z @ 20# per acre with 5# of Orchardgrass or 8# of Timothy. Used Appollo Supreme for years and really like it.
