My system (made by Red Line, I think), has a control unit under hood. Vacuum feed from intake manifold or vacuum pump; 2 vacuum lines to rear with quick-couplers to trailer. Trailer has brake booster and brake fluid reservoir just like your truck. Trailer brakes work just like (and in conjunction with) truck brakes. Truck also has manual (or emergency) handle inside cab. I think they're more reliable than electric brakes.
