I noted that a number of manufactuers have recently switched to recommending 10w30 oil. My 13 horsepower HF generator and my push mower makers have said the same. Since your engine has run for years on 10w30 I doubt that it would suddenly start blowing smoke at start up because of worn valve stem guides. Check that intake valve stem seals. The intake cycle forms a vacuum and if the seal is worn or bad it will suck oil into the cylinders through the valve stem guide. I use a synthetic oil.
Pull both spark plugs and see if one has more carbon or oil on it. That might indicate if one of the seals is bad. It could be both because of its age. Remember, air cooled engines run hotter than water cooled engines and even synthetic rubbers have their limit.
