BANG!!!

I have a 1978 MF 230...Great Tractor! I have two questions about it. When the tractor is going forward, the first time you hit the brakes a loud bang comes from the left hind wheel, but the brakes work fine. The other question is about shifting. When going from neutral to first or reverse it grinds a little, but not when going from one gear to the other. Is this normal?
