I was thinking they bought something in an auction during the early 1980, or even late 70's as many farms were going out of business at the time, according to my research (and you mentioned as well). The farm at that time was profitable (I need to make it many more acres - which can be easily done.) It isn't until the late 90's it falls into trouble. So by 2004, and after three years of drought they are pretty much done (especially have the Pa is shot, and Ma is taken by the drug cartel). :o
