If all you're doing is digging a hole in the ground and waiting for water to show up, you might be in for a heck of a long wait.

Then there's the matter of getting the water (and muck) back out of the pond so it's a pond, not a muck pit. I've got one of the latter from the previous owner. :-(

Fwiw, the previous owner took a perfectly nice clay lined spring fed pond and "improved" it. He punched through the liner on one side, built far too steep a wall up the hillside. Now I've got major erosion problems, silt and filth several feet deep, and my septic system is submirged because the water table has been raised several feet all around the pond.

So, before you go casually digging yourself a hole with visions of a pretty pond, give it a lot more research.
