Eaten up axle seals

This question's for a pickup, but applies to lots of machinery too I think. What would cause the rear axle seals to keep failing? I get about 8-9,000 miles, before they start leaking again. It looks like there are tiny little shavings of seal material on the inside of the brake shoes. The shafts are nice and smooth, not grooved, and I replaced the bearings, thinking that maybe they were a little loose, but the seals still get eat up.
