This story is often used to explain the circulation of money and how said circulation keeps people and communities afloat. Any where there is a large mexican workforce the same thing is happening whether the local people realize it or not, the mexicans send most of what they earn back to mexico, that money is lost to the local economies forever and that is the real root cause of why the local born children have been leaving, sustained economic expansion is not possible without local circulation of the money.
