I have a IHC404, with manual steering, it's been a little loose for several years, but the other day the steering went wild, it would let me turn on direction but free wheel the other direction, had to backup to get the wheels straight to get it to turn. Pulled the bolster out and checked the gears, the ware dosen't seem that bad, a little spaling on the worm gear. There is some play on the shaft that looks like it caused the seal to fail, because there wasn't much grease left.I trying to figure out how much play should be in the rotation of the shaft, I have about 0.12 when I rock the shaft back and forth. I can't see why it caused this problem, the woodruff key on the joint is good and all the steering rods are soild, have no idea where the slippage is coming from.
