8 volt battery...???

We are repairing an Farmal C and realized the battery is an 8 volt. We are having problems getting a spark at the points. The 8 volt battery is shot. Can we replace it with a 6 volt battery without having to change anything else. Will the generator, regulator, etc work ok with a 6 volt. If I am thinking correctly the 8 volt will just give it a little more umph on the starter. But I usually don't think correct so I figured I better ask.
