Allow me to chime in since my background is a tobacco farmer in tobacco country. Tobacco has been a mainstay on farms in our area since the early 1900's. It is a labor intensive crop that is sensitive to disease and weather. It can be economically productive some years and other years it can require your labor with something going wrong late in the season that can be an economic disaster due to the cost per acre. It has over the years bought farms, kept families off welfare, sent kids to college, and allowed many families to work and pay bills in an area where there is basically no industry but a people that want to work. There are no "rich" tobacco farmers that I know of but they are honest, hard working farmers that are growing a legal crop. I will be the first to admit that tobacco is a health hazard and I have never smoked, dipped, chewed or used tobacco in any form. That being said, there are plenty of other health hazards in our society and when I hear about legalizing pot or see the ads promoting alcohol It rings wrong with myself as well as all tobacco farmers. In tobacco states it is a way of life in some areas and would be extremely "politically incorrect" for an outsider to drop by a local diner and bash tobacco farmers or the crop. One would feel out of place quickly. There are many jobs in farming that require dirty, hard work and growing tobacco is certainly one of them.

You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o
