He's going to need a LOT of batteries to run a coffee pot. I use a small inverter to operate the TV set when off the grid, but even that quickly depletes the battery. There are inverters that do what he wants to do: Use shore power when it's available but automatically switch to batteries when it's not. But they are not cheap, are fairly complicated to install and require plenty of battery capacity.
We have two Farberware percolators in our camper, one stovetop and one electric. The stovetop one is slower, so we only use it when we don't have shore power.
