OSHA has a limit of 90 dB over 8 hours. NIOSH has a limit of 85 dB over 8 hours of unprotected hearing.
If you have a smart phone, there are apps out there to make your phone into a reasonable decibel meter. Make sure to measure where you work, and at the throttle/loads you are measuring to. Measuring at the source of the sound is NOT what you are hearing 6' away.
Note that the decibel scale is not linear, but logrighmic. Meaning......a shift from 80 to 90 decibels is a lot louder than you think.
Take care of your ears. You can buy hundreds of really good mufflers for the cost of a decent set of hearing aids these days.
