You hit a sore spot with me that just reared up, but didn't want to post here as it's off topic. But as long as the thread is here... First, I check out at 22.7k speed. I have a 33k modem. Local phoneco, which is the local provider as well, says our rural lines don't support over 28k, no matter what modem you use. I believe they are using rather cheap modems to begin with. The phoneco boght out all other local providers, and as they control the phone wires they haven't let anyone else in. Nice monopoly, no competition, no service either. So, those of us out in the rural areas don't have any such fancy connections. I set up an old 486 (Win3.1) computer for a friend. It does exactly what he wants it to do. He does not have it hooked up to the internet, and he does not have a printer. He does need a Zip drive, which we hooked up no problem. However, it nags a person about regestering the Zip every 2 weeks. You have 3 options: 1. Connect to internet & reg. 2. Print out a reg sheet. 3. Remind again in 2 weeks. Well, what the?????? So this stupid little program has to run endlessly in his computer. What a STUPID customer support 'feature'. (Yes, borrow a computer, rip out the reminder program, etc. - the point is, Iomega is not thinking of potentioal customers... what if he actually wanted to register?) I tried to upgrade my old Internet Explorer 3.x a while back. It was an 'interactive' 12 meg download. My ISP limits me to a 4 hour connect time - I will be logged off after 4 hours. How can I trust doing an interactive upgrade like that at 28k modem with a 4 hour time limit???? No way, could leave my core system software damaged. Microsoft isn't thinking of it's customers' needs. So, a friend of mine got a new Dell computer with Windows XP. (No printer either, tho that will come soon...) He doesn't want to connect to the internet for right now. Nearly every install, nearly every thing he does with Windows pops up a window, "Oh, can't connect to the internet, try again????" It's just hopelss trying to do anything with that Windows XP. Limited to 28k modem, I don't think I want to upgrade my machine any more. I just couldn't deal with that poor of customer support. Microsoft is trying to turn every computer into an internet fixture with Windows XP. Not for me to do business like that. It's just not possible. --->Paul
