I've heard lots of engines make that little popping sound out the exhaust at an idle. I think its caused by them running slightly on the lean side and the timing is advanced plenty. However, most times thats where the timing should be to be right when reved up because of lack of enough mechanical advance in the dist. It will stop if you delay the timing and richen up the idle mixture, but I wouldn't do that. To me that little popping sound means the engine is running nice and free and ready to roll!!
