About 10-11yrs old,we were making hay on shares for an elderly neighbor.I was running wagons back and forth with a Ford 8N.Left brake worked OK backing up,right brake worked OK going forward, was used to this.No ballast in the tires. There was a long hill, loose gravel,on the way to neighbors, and a blind RR crossing on the far side.Scratched my way up the hill, slippin and clawin with about 110 bales on hay on the load.As I topped the hill and started down, pickin up speed,I heard the train whistle and here came the train.Slapped the throttle shut, stomped on the brakes, locking up the right wheel, but the load behind was too heavy, kept sliding toward the tracks.Don't know if instinct or luck took hold, cuz I cut the wheel right, just before the tracks, wagon jackknifed, dumped several bales of hay atop me and the N,but everything stopped,as the train thundered by,whistle screaming about 2-3 feet away from the tractor.Only damage was bent wagon pole and a couple bales that hit the train wheels.... Mom & Dad were out in the yard about 1/4 mi away across the field, saw me go up the hill, heard the trains"Panic" whistle and braking attempt and seemed to be there in seconds,I was pretty shakey for a couple hrs..Still get tense at grade crossings when theres a train around. Oh and the N got new brakes and fluid in the tires within a couple of days.

My wife who works at a local school, and only has weekends and summers off, while on t
