Some cold starting devices use a heater in the intake manifold, somewhat like a large cigarette lighter element. If the ether hits this, it can really go "boom". Ford used this system on many tractors and some imports do too. To use ether with them, do not preheat the element. Instead, spray small amount of ether and begin cranking. The ether will be drawn into the engine before the element gets hot. With my import, if I hold the heater switch long enough, it actually starts a fire in the intake manifold from the attached reservoir which has a thermostatic valve dripping fuel on the hot element. Engine fires right off, but may not continue running if really cold. Second time it stays running. Safer than ether and less stress on the engine.
