Both tires off the ground, spinning the tires, I assume one is going backwards, the other forwards. The clunk is therefore in the differential or final drive pinions/bull gears. Isolate the sound with a stethoscope (or dowel rod) and you will find it. What makes you believe it is stuck in gear? Taking the top off to look at the gears should have allowed you to put the shifter in Neutral, and the sliding gears in neutral before putting the top back on. Jim
