Splitting stumps is tough tough tough work. He might have been pulling your leg just to see you sweat. That wood is so twisted together where the roots spread out you would be lucky to get an axe ito it without it bouncing out, or just sticking in so hard you break the handle pulling it out.I had a neighbor stick a steel wedge into a stump so far he couldn't get it out and the stump wouldn't split, so he had to burn it out and it ruined the wedge. Before the world went nuts you could get hold of the local extension office and they would give you the formula for ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel to blast them out cheap. Since OK City, that stopped. Most mines use that formula now instead of dynamite, maybe one of the guys there would help if there is one near you. Don't try it on your own without knowing how. Your wife may have to trade in the casket for a dust pan and broom.
