Several years back I worked for a large pest control company There is lots of things to do and only a few ways to get rid of them. You can kill the workers all day and they won't leave, you have to kill the queen. Then and only then will they go. Burning them only removes the ones on top and the ones that are running out. Electrocution will not work because the soil will not have enough conductivity to transfer the electric.(Unless it's been raining like crazy for days.) Orthoboric acid is what you are after. It comes in many varieties. Used to kill all the little critters. It may also be referred to as boric acid. It should be bought in a powder from any Wal Mart Kmart ect. It may not read boric acid in the title, but read the ingrediants. It can befound also in roach and waterbug containers. Then put a dusting on the area on and at the hill.JUST A DUSTING. (for example if you were the size of an ant and someone dumpped a bunch of powder around your house....would you walk over it or around it?) It will have to be reapplied after rains and heavy frosts. It will take 5-10 days to see the results. The powder is a desicant and what happens is they walk over the dust causing it to stick to the fibers on their legs coming into contact with other and the queen and therefore passing it around....sorta like a bad cold. It causes them death by drying out. It removes the water in them. It is most commonly used when edible pesticles are unusable or impracticle. It takes time but it does work.
Your other effective method is find Diazanon granules or Dursban granules also available at the same places. These are very safe around kids, pets ect. The cat can go around licking granules up all day and not get sick. Compare the body weight of each and then figure out how many dozen bottles you need to feed the neighbor cat.The granules are sprinkled out like putting the sprinkles on a cake.(but not so many) The ants go and feed upon them, carry the feed back to the other ants, and then go to feed the queen. This will also take about the same time frame. Replace them after you start seeing them cart of with most of the food. They also need to be replaced after rain and exceesive frost.
I belive the method I would us first would would be the granules. Then stand(DON'T SIT) and watch them eat their last meal. These ingested products attack to nervous system.
Good luck .....let me know if you have more questions...............This is the longest reply I ever wrote about in here!!!!
P.S I have nothing against my neighbors cat!!
