backwards tractors for forklifts, HOW?

Passed a tractor parked along the roadside today that had been converted to a REAR forklift. Was painted a forest green, but I think it was a '50 vinyage AC something. What doesn't matter, as much as the how. HOW do they get the tractor to run backwards? Redesign the transmission? I've even run a couple of these rebuilds, on Farmalls, and they seemed to do OK, except that everything was reversed - trasmission had 4 speeds backwards, one forward, etc, but you were also sitting backwards, so things worked out.
