I've watched this battle on two fronts. First as my grandfather's farming community transformed to a bedroom community for Columbus, OH. Eveyone liked the bucolic feel of the place, built their trophy houses with their neo-Victorian gingerbread, and then discovered that eau-de-hog was overwhelming the delicate fragrances wafting from their electric potpourri machines. LAter, I lived up in Maine for a lot of years. Folks like those quiet New England villages on the salt water well enough -- quaint and colorful, dontchya know. So they move up from Connecticut and like places and immediately set about to enacting ordinances to deal with peeling paint, encroaching tree limbs. The best were the ones that bought along the harbors, which were especially quaint and colorful what with the lobsterin' and fishing boats bobbing about on their moorings. Imagine the dismay of the flatlanders when they discovered that these boats were not provided at town expense for the purpose of enhancing the scenery, but were actually working boats, with engines poorly muffled if at all, and that the ruffians that operate them do so on a schedule that has more to do with the tides than a 9 to 5 day. Just seems that they like the looks or feel of a place, move there, and then spend all their time trying to make it like the place they came from.
